What Type of Hot-Water System Do You Have?
Identifying your hot-water system is the first step toward diagnosing a problem. Here is how to identify what type of system you have.
Combi Boiler
A single wall-mounted unit that provides both heating and instant hot water. No separate hot-water tank. The unit fires up whenever you turn on a hot water tap.
Boiler with Indirect Tank
A boiler (usually in the basement) with a separate tank connected to it. The tank has pipes going to the boiler. The boiler heats water that warms your tap water through a coil inside the tank.
Standalone Tank
A single tank (gas or electric) that heats and stores hot water. Gas tanks have a vent pipe at the top. Electric tanks have no vent pipe and have electrical connections.
Tankless Water Heater
A wall-mounted unit that heats water on demand. Smaller than a tank, with a gas supply pipe and vent. Activates only when hot water is flowing.

Safety Reminder
If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
