Efficiency Ratings — AFUE, SEER, HSPF, EER
Efficiency ratings are the most important numbers to understand when comparing HVAC equipment. AFUE applies to furnaces and boilers (higher = better), SEER applies to cooling (higher = better), HSPF applies to heat pump heating (higher = better). New Canadian regulations require minimum AFUE of 90% for furnaces, SEER of 15 for split systems, and HSPF of 8.5 for heat pumps. Energy Star certified equipment exceeds these minimums.
Installation and Service Requirements in BC
All HVAC installations and gas-related repairs in BC must be performed by licensed contractors registered with Technical Safety BC.
