How to Properly Shut Down Your Water Heater for Vacation
Published: July 20, 2026 — CANRO Heating & Cooling — Greater Vancouver, BC
Gas Water Heater Steps
Turn the gas control knob to Vacation or Pilot setting (keeps the pilot lit but stops heating the tank). Do NOT turn off the gas supply — the pilot needs gas to stay lit. Close the cold water supply valve to prevent flow if a pipe bursts while you are away.
Electric Water Heater Steps
Turn off the breaker at the electrical panel. This cuts power to the heating elements completely. Close the cold water supply valve to the water heater. If you have a heat pump water heater, also switch it to Vacation mode through the control panel.
Returning Home
Before turning the water heater back on: open the cold water supply valve, purge air from the system by opening a hot water tap until water flows steadily, turn the gas control back to ON or restore breaker power. Wait 30-60 minutes for the tank to heat up.
