Water Heater Recovery Rate — How Fast Does Your Tank Reheat?
Published: July 20, 2026 — CANRO Heating & Cooling — Greater Vancouver, BC
Recovery Rate Factors
Recovery rate depends on: BTU input (gas) or wattage (electric), tank size, UEF efficiency, and incoming water temperature. Vancouver cold incoming water (5-10°C in winter) reduces recovery rate compared to warmer regions.
Gas vs Electric Recovery
Gas 40-gallon tank recovers approximately 30-40 gallons per hour. Gas 50-gallon recovers 35-45 gallons per hour. Electric 50-gallon recovers 18-25 gallons per hour. Gas recovers 2-3 times faster than electric, allowing smaller tanks for the same household.
Real-World Impact
Faster recovery means you can take multiple showers back-to-back without running out of hot water. If your household runs out of hot water during peak times, a higher BTU input burner or a larger tank will improve recovery.
