Emergency Scenarios

If the gas smell is strong and continuous, or accompanied by a hissing sound: EVACUATE immediately, do not operate any electrical switches, call 911 or the gas utility emergency line from outside. Do not re-enter until cleared by emergency services.

Non-Emergency Scenarios

A faint gas smell that occurs only when the water heater runs, or a smell that dissipates quickly, may indicate: the pilot was out and has been relit (a small amount of gas escapes during relighting), burner misalignment, or a minor gas valve leak. Call for same-day professional inspection.

After the Emergency

After the gas utility secures the site, have a licensed gas fitter inspect the complete gas train: gas valve, burner assembly, pilot assembly, and all gas pipe connections. Do not relight the water heater until it has been professionally inspected.
