Gas Flex Connectors for Water Heaters — Are They Safe?

Code Requirements

BC Gas Code permits flexible gas connectors for water heaters if: they are the approved type (CSST or listed flex connector), they are properly bonded and grounded for electrical safety, they are not longer than 6 feet without additional bracing, and they are not concealed within walls.

Safety Considerations

Flex connectors are safe when properly installed. Risks include: corrosion from moisture in the air, physical damage from being bumped or kinked, and improper bonding (can cause electrical arcing). Inspect flex connectors annually for signs of corrosion or damage.

Replacement Signs

Replace a flex connector if you see: green or white corrosion (verdigris), kinks or sharp bends, cracks in the outer casing, or if it is over 10 years old. Corroded flex connectors can develop pinhole leaks and are a common source of gas odours.
