HVAC Energy Monitors — Track Your Heating and Cooling Costs

Whole-Home Energy Monitors

Sense ($300-400): monitors your entire home electrical panel using sensor clamps — identifies HVAC electricity usage, compressor startup, and fan operation. Emporia Vue ($150-200): individual circuit monitoring — see exactly what your heat pump, furnace, or AC uses. Installation in the electrical panel by an electrician recommended.

Gas Usage Monitoring

FortisBC online portal: tracks your daily gas usage (updated every 24 hours) — free with your account. Compare day-over-day and year-over-year usage. Smart thermostat: shows heating runtime and estimated HVAC energy consumption (less accurate but convenient). Dedicated gas monitor: Sense Home app shows estimated gas usage (if gas meter data is available).

Using Energy Data to Save

Track your baseline usage (non-heating months). Compare to heating months to isolate HVAC costs. Set monthly targets for energy consumption. Use the data to evaluate: thermostat schedule changes, furnace filter replacements (clean filter = lower usage), and efficiency of a new system compared to your old one. Knowledge is power — and savings.

Safety Reminder

If you smell gas, suspect carbon monoxide or believe there is an immediate danger, leave the property and contact emergency services or the appropriate gas emergency authority. Do not remain inside — exit the building immediately and call for help from outside.
