How Time-of-Use Rates Work
BC Hydro offers optional time-of-use (TOU) rates in some areas. TOU rates charge less for electricity during off-peak hours (11 PM-7 AM) and more during peak hours (4 PM-9 PM). Mid-peak rates apply the rest of the day. The exact rate differences vary — typically off-peak is 30-50% cheaper than peak. TOU is best for households that can shift energy use to off-peak hours.
Optimal Heat Pump Scheduling
If on TOU rates: pre-cool or pre-heat your home during off-peak hours (before 4 PM), reduce heat pump operation during peak hours (4 PM-9 PM) by setting the thermostat a few degrees higher in summer or lower in winter. Use the heat pump auxiliary heat lockout to prevent aux heat from running during peak hours when it is most expensive.
Is TOU Worth It for Heat Pumps?
For heat pump owners with good insulation and a programmable thermostat: TOU rates can save $100-300/year compared to standard tiered rates. For homes that are occupied during peak hours (work-from-home, stay-at-home): savings are less but still positive. Check BC Hydro website for current TOU rates and availability in your area.
